Fane’s heart beat harder. He picked up his cup to divert his attention. “My commanding officers and I would agree with you,” he sipped the tangy liquid. He grimaced. Coffee had never been his thing.
“Not up to your standards?” Prince Orlov smirked.
Fane glared at his cup. He had hoped that maybe luxury coffee would have a better taste. “I guess I’ve just never been one for coffee,” he mused, wishing for some sweetener.
“Do you like tea?” curious, Prince Orlov took a sip of his coffee.
“I’m more of a hot chocolate person,” Fane said. He looked up from his cup, horrified. He had never told anyone that. A scarlet blush swept up his cheeks. Prince Orlov snickered. Fane was molified. “Don’t tell anyone, Mr. Orlov,” he threatened.
“A man’s drink is a man’s drink,” placated Prince Orlov. Fane squirmed uncomfortably in his chair, taking another sip of the bitter brew. “Would you rather a different order?” Prince Orlov offered, moving to signal over the waiter.
Fane shook his head and blew on his coffee again. “No, it’ll be all right. I may have a penchant for sweet drinks, but I’m also not one for wasting money. I’ll drink what I ordered, it’s all right,” Fane reassured the blonde man.
“That’s a good attribute to have, Mr. Anson. Liking sweet drinks.” Prince Orlov paused, looking out the window. He seemed to have forgot the world around him. After a second, he focused once more on Fane. “My grandmother used to make sweet lassi for my sister and myself. I have yet to find a decent shop here selling the specialty,” Prince Orlov confided with a nostalgic smile that lit his face.
“You must have been very close,” Fane soothed, fighting the radiating pain that sang from his shoulder to his thigh. He was going to make it through this meeting looking like a normal person if it killed him.
